The story

The Fox and the Tiger

Hello there. My name is Hu Li, and my fur is the color of autumn leaves. I live in a lush, green jungle in ancient China, where the bamboo grows taller than the tallest giant and colorful birds sing from the treetops. Most days are wonderful, but there is one creature who makes all the smaller animals tremble: the great, grumpy Tiger with stripes as dark as shadows. One sunny afternoon, I heard a mighty ROAR that shook the leaves right off the trees. It was the Tiger, and he looked very hungry. This is the story of The Fox and the Tiger, and how a little bit of cleverness can save your tail.

The Tiger blocked my path, his eyes gleaming. 'Little fox,' he growled, 'I am going to eat you for my lunch.' My heart beat like a drum, but I knew I had to think fast. I puffed out my chest and stood as tall as I could. 'You can't eat me.' I said in my bravest voice. 'The great Jade Emperor, ruler of all the heavens, has chosen me to be the King of the Forest. If you harm me, you will make him very angry.' The Tiger blinked, surprised. He had never heard of a fox king before. 'You? The king?' he scoffed. 'I don't believe you.' I flicked my tail smartly. 'Then follow me,' I challenged. 'Walk behind me through the jungle and you will see for yourself how all the other animals fear me.' The Tiger was curious, so he agreed. I began to walk proudly down the path, with the huge Tiger padding silently behind me. Soon, a family of monkeys chattering in a tree saw us. They took one look, shrieked in fear, and scrambled to the highest branches. Then, a rabbit nibbling on clover saw us, and he hopped away as fast as his legs could carry him. Every animal we passed—the deer, the badgers, the wild boars—they all saw us and ran for their lives.

The Tiger was amazed. He didn't realize the animals were running from him, the big scary predator behind me. He thought they were all terrified of the little red fox. He bowed his head and said, 'Forgive me, O King of the Forest. I did not know.' Then he turned and ran away, his tail between his legs, promising never to bother me again. I had tricked the strongest animal in the jungle not with sharp claws or big teeth, but with a clever idea. For hundreds of years, people in China have told my story. It even became a famous saying, 'hú jiǎ hǔ wēi,' which means 'the fox borrowing the tiger's might.' It’s a reminder that you don’t have to be the biggest or the strongest to be powerful. Your brain is your greatest strength. My story still inspires cartoons and books today, teaching everyone that a quick mind can help you face any challenge.
