The story

The Myth of Yu the Great

My boots squished in the mud as I looked out over the endless water. For as long as I could remember, it had rained, turning our beautiful fields into a giant, swirling lake. My name is Yu, and I knew I had to do something to save my people. This is the story of how I faced the Great Flood of China. My own father, Gun, had tried to stop the water by building dams with magic soil, but the angry river just broke them down like they were made of sand. I watched the water rise higher and higher, covering the hills where we used to play. I felt a great determination bubble up inside me, and I promised myself I would find a new way, a smarter way, to bring the sun back to our land and see my people smile again.

Instead of trying to block the mighty river, I came up with a new plan. “If the river wants to go somewhere,” I thought, “maybe I should help it find its way.” For thirteen long years, I traveled all over China, from the highest snowy mountains to the lowest green valleys. I was so busy helping the water that I didn't even stop to visit my own family. My feet grew calloused and my hands grew rough from digging dirt and moving rocks, but I never gave up. I wasn't alone on my journey, though. A magnificent yellow dragon helped me by dragging its long, strong tail across the earth, showing me exactly where to dig new paths for the water. A giant black turtle also helped, carrying special mud on its back to build up the riverbanks and keep them strong. Together, we carved nine new rivers, creating channels that would guide the floodwaters gently toward the great eastern sea. We worked day and night, carving paths through rocky mountains and clearing the way for the water to flow peacefully, like a happy stream instead of an angry monster.

Finally, after so many years of hard work, the day came when the last channel was dug. I watched as the water rushed into its new path, roaring with relief as it flowed away toward the sea. Slowly, wonderfully, the floodwaters receded, revealing the rich, dark earth underneath. The sun, which we had missed for so long, shone down and warmed the land. People came out of their homes, cheering and laughing. They immediately began planting seeds in the fertile soil, ready for a new beginning. They were so grateful for my help that they asked me to be their leader, and I became the first emperor of the Xia Dynasty. My story, the myth of Yu the Great, has been told for thousands of years. It reminds people that you shouldn't always fight against a problem head-on. Sometimes, the cleverest solution is to work with it. It shows that with hard work, teamwork, and a smart plan, even one person can solve the biggest problems and help everyone. Today, artists still paint pictures of me and my dragon friend, and storytellers share my journey to inspire children to never give up.
