Just want FIFA?
Hello! We are the Fédération Internationale de Football Association. That’s a long name, so most people call us by our acronym, FIFA. Our story began a long time ago, in 1904. Back then, the game of soccer, also called football, was getting very popular. But there was a problem! Teams from different countries would play by different rules. It was confusing. So, a few countries in Europe decided to work together. They met in the city of Paris, France, and created our organization. Our first and most important job was to create one single set of rules for all international soccer games, so everyone could play together fairly.
One of our most famous jobs is organizing a very special event that brings the whole world together to celebrate soccer. You may have heard of it—it’s called the FIFA World Cup! This is a huge tournament where national teams from countries all around the globe compete to see who is the best. It’s a time of great excitement and friendship. We held the first World Cup for men’s teams way back in 1930. Much later, in 1991, we started the first Women’s World Cup. These amazing tournaments don’t happen every year. To make them extra special, they happen only once every four years.
Making sure the game is fair is still a very important part of our work. The official rules of soccer are called the Laws of the Game. We help make sure these laws are followed everywhere. Having one set of rules is what makes soccer a truly global sport. It means that a game played in a small town is played the same way as a game in a giant stadium on the other side of the world. The field is the same size, the goals are the same, and the rules about how to play are the same for everyone. This way, any team from any country can play against another, and everyone understands how to play fairly.

When we first started, we were just a small group of countries. But today, we have grown so much! We now have more than 200 member countries from every part of the world. Our job has also grown. We do more than just make rules and run the World Cup. We work to help develop and grow the sport everywhere. We do this by supporting programs that help young players learn and improve. We also help build soccer facilities, like fields and training centers, in places where they are needed. Our goal is to make sure that anyone who wants to play or watch soccer has the chance to enjoy it.
