The story

The Builders of Babylon

Hello! We are the Babylonians. Our home was in a land called Mesopotamia, a long, long time ago. We lived in a big, busy city named Babylon. It was right next to a long, winding river that gave us water and helped us grow our food.

We were great builders and loved making things for our city. We made our houses from mud bricks. We would mix mud and water, shape it into bricks, and let them dry in the hot sun until they were hard. We also built very tall temples that seemed to reach up toward the sky. To come into our city, you had to pass through a huge, beautiful gate. It was painted a bright blue color, like the sky on a sunny day.

At night, after the sun went down, we loved to look up at the sky. The stars would sparkle and shine. We watched the moon change its shape, from a full circle to a tiny sliver. We saw pictures in the stars, like connect-the-dots in the sky. We gave names to groups of stars that looked like animals or brave heroes. Then, we would tell stories about them.

Our city is not here anymore, but people still learn about us today. They have found the special writing we did on clay tablets. They have also found the ruins, or broken pieces, of our buildings buried under the ground. By looking at these things, people can learn our stories and know what life was like for us, the Babylonians.
