The story

We Are the Chagga, People of the Mountain

We are the Chagga people, and for centuries, our home has been the beautiful and fertile slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Our ancestors journeyed to this mountain long ago, and we have been its guardians ever since. Living here has given us incredible gifts. The mountain is a volcano, and its rich volcanic soil is perfect for growing the food that sustains us. But the mountain’s slopes can be steep, and water does not always flow where it is needed most. To solve this, our ancestors developed an ingenious system of irrigation channels centuries ago. These carefully constructed waterways wind across the land, skillfully channeling water from mountain streams directly to our farms, ensuring our crops always have what they need to thrive.

Our connection to this land led us to create a special kind of farming that works in harmony with nature. We call it the kihamba, which is a unique agroforestry system. You can picture it as a multi-layered forest garden. Instead of clearing the land completely, we plant many different crops together in a way that mimics a natural forest. Taller trees provide shade and resources, while shorter plants like bananas grow beneath them, and vegetables and other crops cover the ground. This clever system provides us with a variety of foods and useful materials all year round, making our communities self-sufficient and resilient.

For much of our history, we were organized into many independent chiefdoms. Each community was led by a respected chief known as a mangi, who guided his people and managed the affairs of his territory. This way of life began to change in the late 19th century when coffee was introduced to our region. We quickly realized the potential of this new cash crop. To make sure that our people would benefit from this opportunity, we came together and formed one of the very first successful farming cooperatives in all of Africa. By working together, we could manage the growing and selling of our coffee, which brought prosperity to our communities and helped us build a stronger future.

Today, we continue to live on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, blending our deep-rooted traditions with modern life. Many of us are still farmers, tending to our kihamba gardens and coffee plants, but we also work in many other modern professions. We place a very high value on education, and we encourage our children to learn and succeed in the wider world. Through all these changes, we hold onto what makes us who we are. We work hard to keep our culture, our traditions, and the Chagga language alive, passing down the wisdom of our ancestors to the next generation. We remain the proud people of the mountain, connected to our past and looking forward to our future.
