The story

We Are the Moche People

Hello! We want to tell you our story. We are the Moche people. We lived a long, long time ago. Our home was a very special place in a land that is now called Peru. We lived in a desert, a dry and sandy place right next to the big ocean. Imagine seeing sand all around you and also hearing the big ocean waves splash nearby!

Because we lived in a desert, we had to be clever to grow our food. We made little rivers to bring water all the way from the mountains. This water flowed down to our gardens and helped our plants grow big and strong. We grew yummy food for our families to eat, like sweet corn and healthy beans.

We loved to make wonderful things with our hands. We took soft clay from the earth and made special pots. Our pots were not just round bowls. We made them look like our own faces! We also shaped them to look like the animals we saw every day, like owls with big eyes and little frogs that hop. We also built giant buildings out of mud bricks. These special places were called huacas. Our huacas were very important places where we had ceremonies together.

Our culture ended a long time ago. But you can still see the amazing things we made. People today can find our clay pots and see the faces and animals we created. They can also visit our big buildings to learn about us. Looking at the things we left behind helps people understand how we lived in our desert home by the sea.
