Just want Phoenicians?
Hello! We are the Phoenicians. We lived a very long time ago. Our homes were in cities like Tyre and Sidon, right next to the big, blue sea. The land where we lived is now a country called Lebanon.
We loved to sail on the water. We built big, strong boats to help us travel. We made our ships from the wood of tall cedar trees that grew near our homes. In our ships, we sailed far across the sea. We visited new places, and we met many new people. We would trade the nice things we made with them.
We also knew how to make a very special color. It was a beautiful, deep purple. We had a secret for how to make it! We got the color from tiny little sea snails. This purple color was hard to make, which made it very rare. Kings and queens loved our purple color and wanted to wear clothes made with it.
We had another great idea that we shared with the world. It was a new way to write. Instead of drawing a picture for every word, we used a special mark for each sound. These marks are called letters. This was our alphabet. Other people learned to use our alphabet. It helped create the ABCs that you learn in school today.
Our ancient cities are gone now, but people still remember us. They remember our strong sailing ships that explored the sea. They remember the special purple color we made for kings and queens. And they remember our gift of letters, the alphabet that helps so many people read and write.
