Just want Phoenicians?
Hello! We are the Phoenicians, and we want to share our story with you. We lived a very long time ago in a land with a long coastline on the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. Our homes were in busy cities like Tyre and Sidon. Behind our cities, tall, strong cedar trees grew on the mountains. These trees gave us the perfect wood to build our ships. For us, the sea was not a barrier; it was a highway. We became expert sailors, and our sturdy wooden ships were our way of connecting with the world. We loved to explore, and the sea was our guide, taking us on amazing journeys to new places.
Our travels across the sea were for trading. We would sail from city to city, carrying special things that we made to sell to other people. We were very skilled at making beautiful, clear glass that sparkled in the sun. But our most famous product was a special purple dye. This color was so bright and rare that it was known as the color of royalty. We made this dye from tiny sea snails that we found along the coast. It took many, many snails to make just a little bit of dye, which made it very expensive. Because of this, only powerful kings and queens could afford to wear clothes colored with our amazing purple.
As we traded more and more, we needed an easy way to keep track of everything we bought and sold. So, we came up with a wonderful idea that changed the world. We created our most important invention: an alphabet. Before our invention, people had to draw little pictures for every single word, which took a long time. Our system was much simpler. We created 22 letters, and each letter stood for a sound. By putting the sounds together, we could write down any word. This made it much easier for our traders to keep records and share information.

We were not just traders; we were also great explorers. Our strong ships carried us to faraway lands all around the Mediterranean Sea. As we traveled, we didn't just visit. We also set up new homes for our people and created trading posts where we could do business. Over time, we built many new communities far from our original homeland. Our most famous new city was named Carthage. It started as a small settlement but grew and grew until it became a very large and important city in the ancient world.
Even though our ancient cities are now gone, our story isn't over. Our ideas and inventions left a lasting mark on the world. The alphabet we created was shared with many other people and changed over time to become the alphabet that many people, maybe even you, use today. Our travels across the sea also helped to connect different cultures and communities. By sailing and trading, we helped people in the ancient world share goods and ideas with one another, and that is a legacy we are proud of.
