The story

Our Pueblo Homes

Hello! We are the Pueblo Peoples. We live in a place called the Southwest. The sun is very warm here, and the earth gives us what we need to build our homes. Our homes are special, and we call them pueblos.

We build our houses from the earth itself. We mix mud and straw together to make strong bricks. These are called adobe bricks. We stack the adobe bricks one on top of the other to make our walls. Some of our homes are built right on top of each other, making them very tall. They look like big apartment buildings made of earth. To get to the top rooms, we do not use stairs inside. Instead, we use ladders on the outside. We climb the tall ladders to get to our homes high up.

We are also great farmers. We work together in our communities to grow food. In our gardens, we plant corn, beans, and squash. These three plants grow very well together and are important foods for our families. We love to make beautiful things with our hands, too. We use clay from the earth to make pots. After we shape the pots, we paint pretty designs on them. Each one is a work of art.

We still live in our pueblos today and carry on our traditions. Our families continue to live in the Southwest. We teach our children how to farm and how to make pottery. We are proud of our communities and our special homes. We are the Pueblo Peoples, and we are happy to share our story with you.
