The story

We Are the Sherpa People

Hello! We are the Sherpa people. We want to tell you about where we live. Our homes are way up high in the big, snowy mountains. These mountains are called the Himalayas, and our country is called Nepal. The air is very thin up here, but we are used to it. We live very close to the tallest mountain in the entire world! Its name is Mount Everest. We think of this giant, snowy mountain as our neighbor. We see it every day from our homes.

Living in the mountains has made us strong. We are very good at climbing. We know the paths and the weather. Many people visit our home because they want to climb the big mountains. It can be a little tricky, so we help them. We are guides, and we help people climb safely. We show them the right way to go so they do not get lost. We also help carry their packs and supplies. This makes it easier for them to reach the top. One of our people, Tenzing Norgay, was a very famous climber. He was one of the very first people to stand on the top of Mount Everest.

Life in the mountains is beautiful. We wear warm clothes to stay cozy in the cool air. Our clothes are often bright and colorful. We also love to hang colorful prayer flags outside our homes. The wind catches them, and they flutter all day long. They look like little rainbows dancing in the breeze. Today, we still live in our mountain villages. We are farmers who grow food on the sides of the hills. We are proud of our traditions, and we are happy to share our stories and our home with the world.
