The story

The Land of Many Stories: A Tale from Anatolia

Imagine a special piece of land hugged by the warm sun. Two giant pieces of the world, called Asia and Europe, reach out to touch each other here. I am surrounded by three sparkling blue seas. For thousands and thousands of years, people have built their homes on my soil, creating amazing cities and telling incredible stories that are still whispered on the wind. I have seen more sunrises than you can count. I am a land of legends. My name is Anatolia.

Hello, I am Anatolia. My story starts a very, very long time ago. One of the first towns in the whole world, called Çatalhöyük, grew on my land around 7500 BCE. It was a funny town with no streets. People built their houses right next to each other and used ladders to climb onto their rooftops to walk around. Much later, around 1600 BCE, the mighty Hittite kingdom called me home. The Hittites were very clever and were some of the first people to use strong iron for their tools. They zoomed across my fields in fast chariots pulled by horses. They would say, “Our chariots are the fastest in the world.”. I felt proud to be the ground beneath their powerful wheels. You might have also heard a famous story about a great city on my coast called Troy. It was a place of brave heroes and a clever trick with a giant wooden horse. For years, people wondered if the city was real, and they found its ancient walls right here on my land. I hold so many secrets.

Because I connect two parts of the world, I have always been a special bridge for kings and travelers. Around 334 BCE, a famous young king named Alexander the Great marched across me with his army. He wanted to see the whole world. After him, the Romans came. They built long, straight roads and grand cities with big theaters all over me. Then, for a very long time starting in 330 CE, I became the heart of the powerful Byzantine Empire. They built beautiful churches with sparkling gold pictures inside. Later, new groups of people arrived, like the Seljuks. Finally, around 1299 CE, a new and powerful family began to grow. They were called the Ottomans, and they would build one of the biggest empires in history, with me at its center. People from all over would say, “To get from the East to the West, you must cross Anatolia.”. I watched caravans of camels and lines of soldiers travel across my hills.

Today, I am still here, holding all those memories. I am the main part of a wonderful country called Turkey. A brave leader named Mustafa Kemal Atatürk helped create this new country on October 29th, 1923. He wanted my people to have a modern and bright future. So now, when people visit me, they can see the ancient rooftop houses, the castles of great empires, and the busy cities of today, all in one place. I am a land that shows how many different stories can come together to make one beautiful history that we all share.
