The story

The Cave of Secret Pictures

I am a quiet place inside a green hill in Spain. My walls are cool and made of stone. If you look up, you will see my big secret. I have a picture book painted right on my ceiling. It is very, very old. Hello. I am the Cave of Altamira. I hold a secret picture book painted with red and black earth for you to discover.

A very, very long time ago, around 14,000 years ago, families made me their home. They were the very first artists. They used their hands and colorful dirt to paint on my ceiling. They used black charcoal from their warm fires to draw pictures of the animals they saw outside. They painted big, fluffy bison with curly horns. They painted gentle deer and strong horses that looked like they were running right above their heads. I loved watching them create their beautiful pictures.

For a long, long time, nobody knew about my secret paintings. They were forgotten for thousands of years. Then one day, in the year 1879, a man named Marcelino came to explore me. He brought his little daughter, María. Because she was small, she looked up at my ceiling while her papa looked at the floor. She saw the colorful animals and shouted with joy, “Look, Papa, painted animals.”. She was the first person to see my secret in a very long time.

My paintings are very old and special, so people work hard to protect them. To keep my pictures safe from getting hurt, I am closed so no one can come inside the real me. But right next door, there is a copy of me that looks just the same, so everyone can still visit and see the beautiful animals. My paintings are a window to a world from long ago, reminding us that sharing stories through art connects us all.
