My body is a vast landscape of whispering rivers and mountains that seem to touch the sky. Two of my most famous rivers, the Yangtze and the Yellow River, have nourished my people for thousands of years, acting as my lifeblood. My lands stretch from soaring peaks to deserts that sing in the wind, and within them, I hold stories older than writing itself. My energy comes from the dreams, work, and laughter of more than a billion people who call me home, filling my futuristic cities and quiet countryside with life. Before you learned my name, you may have heard my legends—of powerful dragons, wise thinkers, and incredible inventions that changed the world. I am a civilization that has flowed like a mighty river through time. I am China.

My story as a unified people began with powerful ruling families called dynasties. The first of these, the Xia dynasty, emerged around 2070 BCE, bringing together many of the communities living along my river valleys. Later, during the Shang Dynasty, which began around 1600 BCE, my people developed the earliest form of my written language. They carved intricate characters onto tortoise shells and animal bones, asking questions about harvests, battles, and the future. After them came the Zhou Dynasty, a time of great intellectual awakening. It was during this era, around 551 BCE, that a kind and thoughtful teacher named Confucius was born. He traveled my lands sharing his wisdom, teaching that a good society is built upon strong families, respect for elders, and fair leaders. His ideas took deep root, and for millennia, they have guided the hearts and minds of my people.

For many centuries, my lands were divided into separate, warring kingdoms. This era of conflict ended in 221 BCE, when a fierce and ambitious king, Qin Shi Huang, conquered them all. He declared himself the first emperor and created a unified empire. To protect his new realm from invaders from the north, he commanded his people to connect existing fortifications into one enormous barrier, beginning the project that would eventually become the Great Wall. But the emperor was also concerned with the afterlife. He ordered the creation of a massive, secret army to guard his tomb. For more than two thousand years, these silent warriors remained hidden underground until March 29th, 1974, when a group of farmers digging a well stumbled upon them. They had discovered the Terracotta Army, thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, each with a unique face, ready for a battle that never came.

After the first emperor’s rule, the Han Dynasty began in 206 BCE, ushering in a golden age of peace, prosperity, and amazing innovation. During this time, my people established a network of trade routes that stretched for thousands of miles, connecting me to the Middle East and even Europe. This network became known as the Silk Road. Along these dusty trails, merchants carried my most precious goods, like soft silk, fragrant tea, and exotic spices. More importantly, they carried ideas, art, and beliefs, which flowed in both directions, connecting different cultures in a way the world had never seen before. It was an age of incredible creativity. Around 105 CE, an official named Cai Lun perfected the process of making paper, an invention that would revolutionize communication. In the centuries that followed, my clever people also invented the magnetic compass to guide sailors across vast oceans, gunpowder for spectacular fireworks, and movable type printing to share knowledge more quickly and widely than ever before.

My story continued to evolve with each passing dynasty. During the Ming Dynasty, in the early 15th century, a great admiral named Zheng He commanded enormous fleets of “treasure ships” on seven incredible expeditions. These ships, far larger than any seen in Europe at the time, sailed to Africa and the Middle East, not to conquer, but to trade and explore. Back at home, the emperors were building a breathtaking palace in the capital city of Beijing. Completed in 1420, it was a city within a city, known as the Forbidden City, because ordinary people were forbidden from entering its magnificent, golden-roofed halls. For nearly 500 years, my emperors ruled from this sacred place. But my history has always been one of constant change. In 1912, the last emperor abdicated his throne, bringing my long age of dynasties to a close. A new and very different chapter for my people began on October 1st, 1949, when I was reborn as the People’s Republic of China, the modern nation I am today.

Today, that ancient spirit of creativity and resilience is as strong as ever. My modern cities gleam with towering skyscrapers, my high-speed bullet trains race across the countryside like silver dragons, and my explorers now journey into space. I am a bridge connecting the deep wisdom of my past with the boundless dreams of the future. I am proud to share my delicious food, my beautiful calligraphy, my vibrant festivals, and my incredible history with friends all over the world. My story is far from over, and I invite everyone to be a part of it.
