Just want Harappa?
I am hidden under mounds of earth in a country called Pakistan, near the flowing Ravi River. For thousands of years, I slept. My body is made of millions of reddish bricks, all baked in the sun. They fit together perfectly to make strong walls and straight streets. Before anyone knew my name, they just saw hills where I rested. But I am not a hill. I am a city, a clue to a very old story. I am Harappa.
A very, very long time ago, around 2600 BCE, clever people built me. They were part of a group we now call the Indus Valley Civilization. They didn't just pile up bricks; they planned everything. My streets run in straight lines, like a checkerboard. My houses, big and small, had their own bathrooms and wells for fresh water. I had a big building called a granary to store lots of grain, so no one would go hungry. The people who lived here were busy artists and traders. They made beautiful clay pots and tiny, carved stone seals with pictures of animals like rhinos and unicorns. They used these seals to stamp their goods for trading. They even had a special way of writing, but it's a secret we're still trying to figure out today.
For hundreds of years, I was a happy and bustling place. But around 1900 BCE, things began to change, and my people slowly moved away. The wind and sand covered me up, and I fell into a deep sleep for thousands of years. Then, in the 19th century, people started to find my bricks. It wasn't until the 1920s that curious explorers, called archaeologists, began to carefully dig and wake me up. They discovered my neat streets and amazing buildings. Today, I am a special place where people can visit and see how incredibly smart people were so long ago. I show everyone that even ancient cities had great ideas, and I inspire new builders and dreamers to create wonderful things.
