The Secret of the Brick Cities
Imagine a city where all the streets are straight and tidy, laid out like a big checkerboard. The houses are made of reddish bricks, all baked to be the same size. Can you hear the gentle splash of water. It flows not in puddles, but in clever channels that run alongside the roads, keeping everything clean. Children laugh and play with tiny clay carts, their voices echoing between the strong brick walls. I am not just one city, but a whole family of them, all living together along the banks of a great, wide river. My people were builders and thinkers, creating a wonderful world a long, long time ago. I am the Indus Valley Civilization, and my story began over 5,000 years ago.
My story starts with small villages around the year 3300 BCE. But I grew quickly. By about 2600 BCE, I was a land of big, bustling cities like Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. The people who lived in my cities were so clever. They were amazing planners. They made all their building bricks the very same size, which made building strong houses much easier. They designed their cities with straight roads that crossed each other perfectly, so no one ever got lost. My people also built the world’s first known city-wide drainage systems. These were special covered channels that carried dirty water away from their homes, keeping everyone healthy. In Mohenjo-Daro, they even built a huge public pool called the Great Bath for special ceremonies. My people also carved beautiful, tiny stone seals. They carved animals like bulls and unicorns on them, along with a mysterious script that looks like a secret code.
After many happy years, things began to change around 1900 BCE. The weather grew drier, and the great river that gave my people water began to change its path. It was harder to grow food, so my people did not fight or fall down. They just slowly and peacefully packed their things and moved away to build new homes in other places. But they left a wonderful secret behind for you to discover. The mysterious script on all those tiny stone seals. To this day, nobody has been able to read it. It’s a puzzle that clever people are still trying to solve.
For thousands of years, my cities were hidden under mounds of earth, sleeping and forgotten. Then, in the 1920s, archaeologists dug carefully and found me again. They uncovered my straight streets, my brick houses, and my clever water systems. Today, my story teaches everyone about how amazing people can be when they work together. My cities show how smart planning can make life better for everyone. I hope my story inspires you to be creative and to build wonderful things. And who knows. Maybe one day, a clever mind just like yours will be the one to finally solve the puzzle of my secret script.
