The story

The City of Sunshine Bricks

Imagine a place born from a great, winding river, nestled in a wide, fertile valley in what is now Pakistan and India. For thousands of years, my story was whispered only by the dust. I am not one city, but many, all built from bricks the color of sunshine, baked hard under a warm sun. What was special about these bricks is that they were all the same size, like toy blocks from a giant’s set. My streets were not winding and confusing. They were laid out in straight lines, crossing each other perfectly like a checkerboard. In my busiest days, you could hear the murmur of voices from bustling markets, the clatter of pottery being made, and the gentle lowing of cattle. I was a world of order and peace, a carefully planned home for thousands of people long, long ago. I am the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the first great urban cultures in the world.

My greatest cities, Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, were at their busiest around 2500 BCE. The people who lived within my walls were incredibly clever planners. Long before many other places in the world, they understood the importance of cleanliness and order. Nearly every house, whether big or small, had its own bathroom with a toilet and a place to wash. These bathrooms were connected to a brilliant system of covered drains that ran alongside the streets, carrying wastewater away from homes and keeping the city clean and healthy. Imagine a whole city with plumbing. At Mohenjo-Daro, there was a magnificent structure called the Great Bath. It was a large, deep pool lined with waterproof bricks. No one knows for sure what it was for. Was it a temple? A place for special ceremonies? Or just a public swimming pool for everyone to enjoy? My people were busy. Farmers grew wheat and barley in the fields outside the city walls. Artisans sat in their workshops, crafting beautiful clay pots, shiny beads from stone, and intricate jewelry. And the builders, using those amazing standardized bricks, made sure every building was strong and neat.

My culture was full of beauty and mystery. My most famous creations are small stone seals, carved with incredible skill. On them, you can see powerful animals like bulls with mighty horns, elephants, and rhinoceroses. One popular figure looked like a unicorn, a magical creature from myths. But these seals held more than just pictures. They were stamped with a special kind of writing, a script made of signs and symbols. It is one of my biggest secrets, because for all the years that have passed, no one has figured out how to read it yet. What stories do these words tell? Are they names, prayers, or records of goods? We may never know. My people were also great traders. They sailed in boats down the river and across the sea, trading their goods with faraway lands like Mesopotamia. But around 1900 BCE, things began to change. My cities grew quiet. Perhaps the mighty Indus River changed its path, leaving the cities without enough water. Or maybe the climate changed, and the rains stopped coming, making it difficult to grow crops. My people didn't disappear in a great battle or disaster. They simply and slowly moved away, taking their skills and ideas with them to new villages and towns.

For thousands of years, I slept beneath mounds of earth, my story forgotten. The world moved on, building new cities and empires. Then, people with shovels and brushes arrived. They were archaeologists, scientists who study the past. In the year 1921, they began to carefully uncover my city of Harappa. The next year, in 1922, they found Mohenjo-Daro. Slowly, they pieced together the puzzle of my existence. They marveled at my straight streets, my clever drains, and my beautiful, mysterious seals. Even though my writing is still a secret and parts of my story are lost to time, I am not silent. I am a reminder that people long ago had amazing ideas about how to live together. My orderly cities and peaceful culture continue to teach and inspire people today. I show the world that even the most ancient ideas about community and clean living can help us build a better and brighter future.
