The story

The Garden of Europe

Imagine waking up after a long, sleepy winter. All around you, a giant paint box has spilled across the ground. There are rivers of red, sunny splashes of yellow, and dreamy seas of purple. The air smells sweet like candy, and you can hear the happy buzz of busy bees dancing from flower to flower. Nearby, you might even see a tall windmill spinning its arms in the breeze. I live in a special country known for these windmills and for cozy wooden shoes. I am a rainbow on the ground. I am Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe.

I wasn't always a famous flower garden. My story began a very, very long time ago, back in the 15th century. I started as a simple garden next to a big castle. A countess named Jacoba van Beieren lived there, and her cooks would come to me to pick fresh herbs and vegetables for her dinner. That is how I got my name. Keukenhof means 'Kitchen Garden' in the Dutch language. For hundreds of years, I helped feed the people in the castle. Then, in the year 1857, two very clever designers, a father and son named Zocher, came to see me. They had a wonderful plan. They gave me lovely winding paths to walk on and quiet, peaceful ponds where ducks could swim. They made me beautiful, and I still have their lovely design today.

A long time later, another brilliant idea bloomed. In the year 1949, a group of smart flower growers were looking for a special place. They wanted to show the whole world the amazing tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths that grew from their flower bulbs. They chose me to be their grand stage. It was so exciting. That autumn, they planted thousands and thousands of bulbs in my soil, tucking them in like tiny sleeping treasures. They worked so hard, and I could feel the magic growing under the ground. I held my breath all winter, waiting for the big surprise. When spring arrived in 1950, I opened my gates for the very first time as a grand flower park for everyone to visit. Oh, the joy I felt seeing the happy, smiling faces of children and grown-ups walking my new colorful paths.

Now, my life is a wonderful circle of seasons. Every single autumn, gardeners come and plant millions of new bulbs. It is a secret promise of the beauty that will come. When spring finally arrives, I burst into an incredible show of color that is brand new every year. People travel from all over the world to walk my paths, take pictures, and feel happy among the flowers. I am more than just a garden. I am a reminder that even after a long, cold winter, something beautiful is always waiting to bloom. I help connect people from everywhere through the simple joy of a flower, and that makes me the happiest garden in the world.
