Just want Palace of Versailles?
My golden gates sparkle in the sun, opening up to enormous, beautiful gardens where fountains seem to dance with joy. If you walk inside, you will find long hallways filled with amazing paintings and rooms decorated with gold. I even have a special room where hundreds of mirrors reflect the light, making it feel like you are standing inside a diamond. I am not just any house. I am a palace, a dream made real just outside the city of Paris, in a country called France. I am the Palace of Versailles.
I wasn't always this grand. A long, long time ago, I was just a small, cozy hunting lodge. A king named Louis XIII built me in 1623 so he could have a simple place to rest. But his son, King Louis XIV, had a much bigger idea for me. He was called the 'Sun King' because he wanted everything around him to be as bright and wonderful as the sun. Starting in 1661, he told the best artists and builders in the world, “I want you to make this lodge into the most magnificent palace anyone has ever seen.”. They worked for many years, adding beautiful rooms and planting incredible gardens. They built my amazing Hall of Mirrors, which was finished around 1684. Sunlight and candlelight would bounce between its 357 mirrors, and it felt like the whole room was glowing. On May 6th, 1682, the Sun King and all of his friends and helpers moved in. I was no longer a quiet lodge. I was the bustling, glittering heart of France.
After the kings and queens were gone, my halls grew quieter for a while. But I still had important work to do. On June 28th, 1919, a very important meeting happened inside me. Leaders from all over the world gathered in my Hall of Mirrors. They signed a paper called the Treaty of Versailles, which was a promise to work for peace after a very big war. I felt so proud to be a place where people chose peace. Today, my doors are open to everyone. I am a museum where families can walk through my halls, explore my gardens, and listen to the stories I have to tell. I love sharing my beauty and my history, reminding everyone that even a small lodge can grow into a magnificent dream that inspires people for hundreds and hundreds of years.
