The Country That Reached for the Stars
Imagine a country so big it stretched over snowy forests and warm, sunny fields. It reached from cold, splashy seas all the way to tall, pointy mountains. I was like a giant family, with many different places and people all living together. I was called the Soviet Union. My story as one big family began a long, long time ago. On December 30th, 1922, many lands decided to join together to become one big, happy country.
I loved to dream big dreams. At night, I would look up at the sky and see all the twinkling stars. I wanted to go visit them. It was a very exciting time. On a special day, October 4th, 1957, I sent a shiny, round ball into space. Its name was Sputnik, and it flew all around our world saying, 'beep-beep-beep.' Then, a brave explorer named Yuri Gagarin got ready for an amazing adventure. On April 12th, 1961, he became the very first person to travel into outer space. He flew high above the clouds and saw our whole world, a beautiful blue and white ball.
After many years of adventures together, my family of lands decided it was time for a change. It was like when big kids are ready to have their own rooms. On December 26th, 1991, each land became its own country again, ready for new adventures. Even though I am not one big country anymore, the wonderful stories, happy songs, and amazing trips to the stars are still remembered. The countries are still neighbors and friends, and they will always share the special time they were one big family that dreamed of visiting the stars.
