A Sunny Hello from the Oldest City
I feel the warm sunshine on my old stone walls and listen to the gentle waves of the ocean nearby. I have tall palm trees that sway in the salty breeze, and birds sing happy songs in their branches. People smile as they walk along my paths, feeling the warm air. Do you know who I am? I am St. Augustine, the oldest city in the whole United States, and I live in a sunny place called Florida.
My story began a very, very long time ago. A brave explorer from a country called Spain sailed across the big blue ocean on a ship. His name was Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, and he found me on September 8th, 1565. He thought I was a beautiful place to build a new home for his friends and family. To keep everyone safe, my people built a huge, strong fort called the Castillo de San Marcos. They started building it in the year 1672. The walls are made of special, sparkly shells all stuck together called coquina. This made the fort super strong, like a big, stone hug that could keep everyone safe inside.
Today, I am still here, standing tall and proud by the sea. You can walk on my narrow streets, just like people did hundreds of years ago. You can hear the clip-clop of friendly horses pulling carriages and see the strong walls of my old fort. I love it when visitors come to learn about my amazing past. I am a special place where stories from long ago are still alive, waiting for you to discover them. I remind everyone that even very old things have wonderful stories to share.
