The story

The Story of the White House

I have bright white walls and so many sparkly windows. My big, green lawn is a perfect place for squirrels to play and chase acorns all day long. I even have a special garden where yummy vegetables like carrots and tomatoes grow. Can you guess who I am? I am the White House, and I have a wonderful story to share with you.

A long, long time ago, a very important person named George Washington picked the perfect spot just for me. On October 13th, 1792, wonderful workers started to build me, stone by stone, like stacking big, strong blocks. They made my walls tall and proud. The very first president to live inside me was named John Adams. He and his family moved in with me in the year 1800. Oh, I was so happy. My rooms were filled with laughter and cozy chats. It felt so good to have a family to keep me company and call me home.

But one day, something sad happened. On August 24th, 1814, a fire came and hurt my walls. It made me feel very sad and smoky. But kind people worked together to help me feel better. They cleaned me all up and gave me a fresh, new coat of bright white paint. I looked so shiny and new. That beautiful white paint is how I got my famous name, the White House.

Today, I am the home for the President of the United States. I am a very special place where big ideas are shared and friends from all over the world come to visit. I love being a symbol of home for a whole country, shining brightly for everyone to see and dream big dreams.
