The story

The River That Sings a Story

I gurgle and splash as I wiggle through warm, sunny lands. My water feels cool and happy. Little fish with shiny scales dart in my cool water, and thirsty birds dip their beaks for a drink. I am a long, shimmering ribbon of blue and green, sparkling under the big sun. Long, long ago, people saw me and thought, 'What a wonderful place to live and play.' They loved to hear my happy sounds. Do you know who I am? I am the Tigris River.

A very, very long time ago, even before your great-great-great-great-grandparents were born, around the year 10,000 BCE, people learned a special secret. They learned they could grow yummy food in the soft dirt right next to me. They planted tiny seeds and I gave them water to drink. Soon, the seeds grew into tall wheat and crunchy vegetables. People built cozy homes from mud and sticks, and soon, the very first towns and cities grew right on my banks. I felt so proud. With my water, I helped them make a big, wonderful garden. I shared my water with my twin river, the Euphrates, and together we made a special place called Mesopotamia.

I have been flowing for thousands and thousands of years, and I am still here today. I travel through big countries called Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. I watch big boats float by on my back and see happy children playing near my edges. I still help farmers grow yummy food for their families and give water to towns so everyone can have a drink. I connect people and places, just like a long, happy hug. I promise to keep flowing and sharing my water for many, many more years to come.
