The River of Stories
I begin my journey as a tiny trickle of melting snow, high up in tall, rocky mountains. I splash and dance over smooth stones, growing bigger and stronger as other little streams hurry to join me. My waters flow through lands that are sunny and warm, making the ground green and lush where everything else is dusty and brown. For thousands of miles, I am a long, winding ribbon of life in the middle of the desert. People have followed my path for longer than anyone can remember. My name is the Tigris River, and my story is as old as the very first cities in the world.
For thousands of years, people have built their homes right next to me. Long, long ago, around the year 4500 BCE, very clever people called the Sumerians learned how to dig little canals to bring my water to their gardens. This was a wonderful idea. It let them grow lots of yummy food and build the world's first big cities in a land they called Mesopotamia, which means 'the land between the rivers.' I felt so proud. I watched magnificent cities like Nineveh rise on my banks in the 7th century BCE, with strong walls and amazing palaces that touched the sky. Later, in the year 762, a beautiful new city called Baghdad was built right beside me. It became a sparkling center for learning, where brilliant people shared stories, studied the stars, and wrote wonderful books. My waters carried boats filled with colorful spices, soft silk, and exciting ideas from far-off places.
My journey isn't over. Today, I still flow through modern cities and quiet towns in countries like Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. I feel happy to help because I still give water to families for drinking and help farmers grow sweet dates and golden wheat. I am a reminder of all the history I have seen and all the life I have helped grow. Just like I helped the first cities rise from the dust, I continue to be a source of life and a connection to the amazing stories of the past. I am a river of history, and I will keep flowing for many, many years to come, carrying new stories into the future for everyone to share.
