I Am Fear

Hello. My name is Fear. You have probably met me before. I am the feeling that rushes in when you stand up to give a presentation and your palms get sweaty, or the first time you rode a roller coaster and your stomach did a flip. My purpose, my very job, is to be your personal alarm system. I appear to keep you safe and alert when you are facing something new, unknown, or challenging. I am the feeling that helps you prepare for what's next.

Let me show you exactly what I do. Imagine a student named Sam who has a big soccer game today. The other team looks incredibly tough. I arrive on the scene, and instantly, I make Sam’s heart beat faster. This isn't to be scary; it's to send more blood to their muscles so they can run quicker and be more powerful. I make Sam's breathing quicken, pulling more oxygen into their body for extra energy. Sam might think, 'I'm scared I'll mess up,' but what is really happening is that I am getting their body ready for action. I am not trying to stop Sam; I am trying to help them be prepared for the challenge ahead.

Now, Sam could let me take over completely, causing them to sit on the bench and miss the game. But Sam has learned how to work with me. To calm the storm, Sam takes a few slow, deep breaths, which is a signal to me that says, 'Thanks for the alert, I've got this.' They focus their mind on the coach's instructions and remember all the hours of practice they've put in. By facing the challenge with a clear plan, Sam uses my energy to focus intently instead of panicking. I don't vanish completely, but I become a quiet partner, humming in the background instead of shouting warnings.

Do you see now? I am not your enemy. I am a signal, a protector, and a powerful source of energy when you need it most. Listening to me can help you identify real risks, but learning to manage me is how you become brave. Courage isn't the absence of me; it is the act of doing the right thing even when I am there beside you. I continue to help people today by warning them of danger and giving them the heightened focus needed to overcome incredible challenges. Understanding me is your superpower.
