The story

I Am the Fight-or-Flight Response

Hi there! My name is the Fight-or-Flight Response. You can think of me as your body’s built-in superhero alarm system. My main job is to keep you safe when you feel scared, surprised, or threatened. I’m the reason your heart might race when you hear a loud, unexpected noise or why you suddenly get a burst of energy to run fast in a game of tag. I’m always here inside you, ready to help you react quickly without even having to think about it.

When I get switched on, you might notice a lot of things happening in your body all at once. Imagine you're walking in your backyard and you almost step on a snake! Instantly, I jump into action. I make your heart beat like a drum to pump blood and energy to your muscles. I tell your lungs to breathe faster to get more oxygen into your body. Your eyes might get wider to see everything more clearly, and you might feel a little shaky or tingly. This is all me, getting your body ready to either face the challenge, which is the 'fight,' or run away to safety, which is the 'flight.'

The funny thing is, I don’t only show up for big, scary moments. Sometimes I appear when there’s no real danger at all. Have you ever had to give a presentation in front of your whole class? You might get sweaty palms or a fluttery feeling in your stomach that some people call 'butterflies.' That’s me again! Your brain can't always tell the difference between being chased by a bear and being nervous about a math test. I show up to give you extra energy and focus, even when you just need to be brave and speak up in a safe place.

Since I can be a little intense, it’s helpful to know how we can work together to calm me down when you don't need my full power. When you feel me starting to bubble up before a test or a big game, you can take slow, deep breaths. This sends a message to your brain that says, “Everything is okay, we can relax.” You can also tell yourself something positive and strong, like “I’ve got this!” or “I can do this.” This helps your brain understand that you’re not in danger. Learning to work with me is like learning a new superpower for managing your feelings.

I know I can feel overwhelming sometimes, but my purpose has always been to protect you. I am a powerful and ancient instinct that has kept people safe for thousands of years. By understanding me, you can learn when to use my energy to be brave and focused, and when to help me relax. I am a part of what makes you strong and ready for anything life throws your way. I am always on your team, ready to help you face any challenge.
