Making Friends

You’ve felt me before, that little flutter of excitement when you meet someone new who just gets your jokes. I am the process of Making Friends. My journey often begins with a single, sometimes scary, word: 'Hi.' I was there with Alex on the 1st day of middle school. Alex saw a classmate, Sam, reading the same fantasy series they loved. I was the nudge, that little push of courage, that encouraged Alex to say, 'Hey, I love that author!'. That first step is often the hardest because it is filled with worries about what the other person might think or if they will be friendly in return. But it is also the most important step. It is the key that unlocks the door to a new possibility. From that one shared interest, a conversation started, and a bridge between two separate worlds began to form.

After the first 'hello,' my real work begins, and I thrive on shared experiences. For Alex and Sam, I was present in their weekly trips to the library and the long conversations where they discussed book theories. But I am more than just common hobbies. I am the effort you put in to learn about someone else—asking questions about their day and truly listening to the answers without just waiting for your turn to speak. I am the quiet act of remembering that Sam’s birthday is on the 10th of May or that Alex gets nervous before soccer games.
