My Guide to Playing Outside
When I play outside, it means I am moving my body and using my imagination in the fresh air. I love the feeling of sunshine on my skin or a cool breeze on my face while I run, jump, and explore the world around me. This type of play is how my body gets stronger and how my mind gets a chance to relax and be creative. When I'm outdoors, my activities can be anything from building a fort with branches, playing tag with my friends across a big field, or just lying in the grass watching the different shapes the clouds make. Playing outside is different from playing inside because I have so much more space to move freely. I also get to experience new things to see, hear, and smell, like chirping birds or the scent of flowers, which helps my brain and my body grow in healthy ways.
Getting ready for my outdoor fun is simple, and I follow a few steps to make sure it’s a great experience. First, I always check with a grown-up and tell them where I’ll be playing, so they know I'm safe. Next, I look outside to see what the weather is like and dress for the day. If it’s bright and sunny, I make sure to grab a hat to protect my face and put on sunscreen to protect my skin. If it's chilly, I wear a cozy jacket to stay warm. I find a safe spot to play, like my own backyard or a local park that is away from any busy roads. Then, the real fun begins. I can decide what to do—maybe I’ll invent a new game with a ball, go on a scavenger hunt for interesting leaves and stones, or play an exciting game of tag with my friends. While I play, I listen to what my body is telling me. If I start to feel hot or thirsty, I know it’s a good time to find some cool shade and drink some water. When I'm all done playing, I always remember to pick up any of my toys or trash, leaving the space nice and clean for everyone else to enjoy.
Playing outside is an important way I take care of myself. It helps my body stay strong and healthy because I get to run, jump, and move around freely. It also gives my brain a much-needed break from being indoors, which helps me feel calm and allows my imagination to be more creative. Spending time in nature, getting fresh air, and playing actively with friends supports my physical wellness by strengthening my muscles and my emotional wellness by making me feel happy and relaxed. This simple habit helps me live a healthy and balanced life.
