Just want Komodo Dragon?
Hi there! My name is Ora, and I'm a Komodo dragon. I'm not the kind of dragon you read about in fairy tales with wings and fiery breath—I'm a real-life lizard, and I happen to be the biggest one in the entire world! I hatched from a leathery egg in a warm nest that my mother dug into the soil of Flores, one of the beautiful and rugged islands in Indonesia. When I first poked my head out, I was so tiny! For the first few years of my life, I didn't stay on the ground like the grown-ups. Instead, I scurried up into the trees where it was much safer. Up in the branches, I found plenty of insects and small lizards to eat. Living in the trees also protected me from bigger predators, including other adult Komodo dragons who might have mistaken a little one like me for a tasty snack. I spent those early days climbing branches and soaking up the warm tropical sun, learning all the secrets of my island home.
As the years passed, I grew much bigger and stronger. My skin is covered in tough scales that fit together like a suit of armor, protecting me as I move through the brush. Eventually, I became too big and heavy for the trees, so I came down to the ground to live my life as a true giant. One of my most important tools is my long, yellow, forked tongue. It’s not for tasting my food! I flick it in and out of my mouth to collect scent particles from the air. This amazing sense of smell helps me find my next meal from miles away. I am a carnivore, which means I only eat meat. I hunt large animals like deer, wild pigs, and sometimes even huge water buffalo. I am what you call an ambush predator. This means I like to wait patiently, perfectly hidden in the tall grass, until my prey walks by without noticing me. When the moment is right, I use my secret weapon: my bite. My saliva contains venom that stops my prey from getting away. It's a very effective way to make sure I get my dinner. People sometimes think I look slow and clumsy, but I can run in surprisingly fast bursts when I need to!

For a very long time, my kind lived peacefully on our islands, and not many people even knew we existed. That all changed around the year 1910, when a human pilot crashed his plane near our home and saw us for the first time. He went back and told everyone about the giant lizards he had discovered! A couple of years later, in 1912, a scientist named Peter Ouwens came to study us. He was the one who gave us our official scientific name: Varanus komodoensis. Suddenly, we were famous! More and more people started visiting our islands to see the 'living dragons.' While it was interesting to have visitors, it also meant our quiet home was changing. To make sure we would always have a safe place to live, the government of Indonesia did something amazing. On March 6th, 1980, they created the Komodo National Park. This special park protects our islands and all the animals that live here, including me and my family.
Today, I am an apex predator, which means I am at the very top of the food chain on my island. It's a big responsibility! By hunting, I help keep the populations of other animals in balance, which in turn keeps our entire ecosystem healthy and strong. We Komodo dragons are a protected species, but we are now considered endangered because our habitat is shrinking and the world's climate is changing. The good news is that people are working hard to protect us and our island homes. We can live to be about 30 years old, so my story is still being written. I hope that my kind will continue to roam these islands for many, many years to come, reminding everyone of the wild and wonderful creatures that share our planet.
