The story

A Mosquito's Busy Day

Hello, little friend. I am a mosquito. My life started in a very special way. I was a tiny egg resting on the cool water of a puddle. When it was time, I hatched and became a little wiggler. I wiggled and swam all day with my many brothers and sisters. We loved our little puddle home. Then, one day, something magical happened. I grew a pair of delicate wings. I stretched them out and buzzed for the very first time. I flew up, up, up into the big, bright world.

Flying was so much fun. I would zip and zoom through the tall green grass and over the shiny leaves. My favorite thing to do was visit the colorful flowers. My favorite food is the sweet nectar hidden deep inside them. I have a very long, special nose called a proboscis that helps me sip the yummy nectar, just like you might use a straw. It is a very sweet treat. When I get bigger and become a mommy mosquito, I will need a tiny bit of a special drink from other animals. This drink helps my eggs grow big and strong so they can hatch into healthy wigglers, just like I was.

Even though I am very small, I have a very big job in the world. I am a tasty snack for hungry birds, splashy frogs, and swimming fish. They need to eat me to help them grow strong. When I fly from flower to flower drinking nectar, I carry a special dust called pollen with me. This helps new flowers grow. Being a mosquito is a busy and important job in our great big world. Now, I must fly away. Buzz, buzz, goodbye.
