The story

Arthur C. Clarke

Hello! My name is Arthur C. Clarke, and I was a writer who loved to dream about the future. I was born on a farm in a town called Minehead in England on December 16th, 1917. Even as a young boy, I was fascinated by the stars. I would spend hours looking up at the night sky, reading exciting science fiction stories, and imagining what it would be like to travel into space. I wanted to see everything up close, so I built my very own telescope. Through its lens, I could see the craters on the moon and the bright glow of the planets. Those nights filled my head with big ideas about what could be possible.

When I grew up, I joined the Royal Air Force in the 1940s. There, I worked with special equipment called radar, which could see things far away, even in the dark. Working with this technology gave me my biggest idea. In 1945, I thought, 'What if we could put special satellites high up in space?' I imagined they could stay in the exact same spot above the Earth all the time. From there, they could bounce television shows and telephone calls all around the world, like a giant mirror in the sky. This idea could connect everyone, no matter where they lived. To learn more about how the universe worked, I went to college to study math and physics.

Besides science, I also loved writing stories about the future. I wrote about amazing inventions, traveling to other planets, and meeting aliens. In 1968, I helped write a very famous movie called '2001: A Space Odyssey.' It showed people what it might be like to travel deep into space. A few years earlier, in 1956, I moved to a beautiful island called Sri Lanka. There, I found a new world to explore right here on Earth: the ocean. I learned to scuba dive, and when I was underwater, floating weightlessly, it felt just like I was an astronaut floating in space!

I am so happy that my big idea from 1945 actually came true. Today, the satellites I dreamed of are real, and they fly high above you. They help with things you use every day, like GPS to find your way, watching television, and connecting to the internet. The special place where these satellites orbit is sometimes called the 'Clarke Orbit' in my honor. I lived to be 90 years old, and it filled my heart with joy to see my dreams of the future help shape the world you live in. I hope you always stay curious and keep imagining what's possible.
