The story

Brahmagupta: The Genius of Zero

Hello! My name is Brahmagupta, and I was a mathematician and astronomer from the country of India. I was born a very, very long time ago, in the year 598, in a city called Bhillamāla. When I was a young boy, I didn't have video games or television to watch. Instead, I loved to look up at the night sky. The stars twinkled like tiny diamonds, and I always wondered about them. I also loved to play with numbers. They were like a fun puzzle to me, and I spent many hours thinking about them and all the amazing things they could do.

One of my favorite numbers to think about was a very special one: zero. You might think zero means 'nothing,' and it does. But it is also one of the most important numbers in the whole world. I thought about zero a lot and came up with rules for how to use it. I imagined other kinds of numbers, too. I called some 'fortune' numbers, which are what you call positive numbers today, like 1, 2, and 3. I also had an idea for 'debt' numbers, which are what you call negative numbers, like -1, -2, and -3. A debt is when you owe something to someone. I figured out how to add and subtract these fortune and debt numbers, which was a brand-new way of thinking about math back then. It was exciting to see how all these numbers could work together.

When I grew up, my love for the stars led me to a very important job. I became the head of a special building called an observatory in a city called Ujjain. An observatory is a place where people study the stars and planets. I spent my days looking at the sky and writing down everything I saw. In the year 628, I decided to put all of my ideas into one big book. I called it the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta. That’s a long name, I know. Inside, I wrote down all my discoveries about math and how the planets moved in the sky. I wanted other people to be able to read my book and learn from it. Sharing knowledge is one of the best things a person can do.

I lived to be 70 years old, and I filled those years with learning and discovery. After I was gone, my ideas about math, especially about the magical number zero, traveled far away from my home in India. They were shared with people all over the world, helping them build things, study the stars, and understand the world in new ways. So, the next time you write the number zero, remember that it is a powerful idea that I helped share with everyone, and it connects you to a time long ago.
