Hello! My name is Christian IV, and I was a king of Denmark and Norway for a very long time. My story begins in a time of castles and kingdoms, on April 12th, 1577, when I was born at the beautiful Frederiksborg Palace. My father was King Frederick II and my mother was Queen Sophie. Life as a prince was one of privilege, but it changed suddenly. In 1588, when I was just 11 years old, my father passed away. In that moment, I became the new king. However, a boy could not rule a kingdom alone, so a council of wise nobles was appointed to govern in my place until I came of age. During these formative years, I did not sit idly. I spent my youth studying languages, mathematics, and especially the arts of warfare, dreaming of all the great things I would do for my country when I finally took full charge.
On August 29th, 1596, at the age of 19, I was officially crowned king, and the responsibility for the kingdom rested on my shoulders. I was full of ideas and energy, but my greatest passion was architecture. I wanted to transform my cities into magnificent showcases of Danish power and culture, which earned me the nickname 'the Builder King'. My reign became a great period of construction. After a terrible fire destroyed much of the city of Oslo in 1624, I seized the opportunity to have it completely rebuilt according to a modern plan. I was so proud of the new city that I renamed it Christiania in my own honor—a name it would keep for 300 years. In my capital, Copenhagen, I commissioned landmarks that you can still see today. These include the Børsen, our stock exchange with its incredible spire of four intertwined dragon tails, the magnificent Rosenborg Castle which served as my home, and the amazing Round Tower, an astronomical observatory for watching the stars.

I was so proud of the new city that I renamed it Christiania in my own honor—a name it would keep for 300 years. In my capital, Copenhagen, I commissioned landmarks that you can still see today. Building a great kingdom wasn't just about beautiful castles; it was also about making it strong and wealthy. I was fascinated by the idea of global trade and the riches it could bring from faraway lands. To make Denmark a major player on the world stage, I helped establish the Danish East India Company in 1616. This important venture allowed our ships to sail the long and dangerous journey all the way to India and other parts of Asia. They returned carrying valuable spices, fine silks, and other treasures that were highly sought after in Europe. I firmly believed that a strong navy and thriving international trade were the keys to securing our kingdom's success and prosperity. It was an exciting time of expansion, connecting our small corner of the world with distant and fascinating cultures.
A king's reign is rarely entirely peaceful, and mine was no exception. During the 1600s, much of Europe was torn apart by a long and devastating conflict known as the Thirty Years' War. Believing it was my duty to defend the Protestant faith and protect my kingdom's interests in Northern Germany, I made the fateful decision to lead my army into the war in 1625. I was confident in our strength, but war is unpredictable. My forces suffered a terrible defeat at the Battle of Lutter in 1626, a loss that cost us dearly. This was a very difficult period for me and for Denmark. Later in my reign, from 1643 to 1645, we were drawn into another war, this time against our rivals, Sweden. These conflicts drained my kingdom's treasury and resulted in the loss of important territories. From these hard experiences, I learned bitter lessons about the true price of war.
I was king for 59 years, one of the longest reigns in the history of Europe. I lived to be 70 years old, passing away on February 28th, 1648, in my beloved Rosenborg Castle. Though my time as a military commander was marked by both ambition and painful setbacks, people remember me most for the deep and creative passion I had for my country. Today, when people walk through the streets of Copenhagen and look up at the twisting spire of the Børsen or the Round Tower reaching for the sky, they are seeing the dreams I built into reality. I hope I am remembered as the Builder King, a monarch who loved his kingdom and left a beautiful, lasting mark on it forever.
