The story

Gregor Mendel

Hello! My name is Gregor Mendel. A long, long time ago, in the year 1822, I was born. I was a monk, which is a quiet person who lives in a special house called a monastery. My favorite place in the whole world was my garden. I loved to watch the tall sunflowers, smell the sweet roses, and see the busy bees buzzing all around.

In my garden, I grew lots and lots of pea plants. Around the year 1856, I noticed something curious! Some plants were very tall, and others were short. Some had smooth, round peas, and others had wrinkly peas. Some peas were green, and others were yellow. I wondered, 'Why are they all so different?' It was like a big puzzle, and I wanted to find the answer.

To solve the puzzle, I carefully looked at my pea plants every day. I learned that there are special, secret rules that decide if a baby plant will be tall or short, or if its peas will be green or yellow. These rules are passed down from the parent plants to the baby plants. It's the same reason you might have the same color eyes as your mom or dad!

I lived to be 61 years old, and my life came to a gentle end in the year 1884. For a long time, my discoveries were a secret hidden in my notebooks. But now, people know all about my work in the garden. Today, I am remembered as the ‘Father of Genetics,’ and my discoveries help scientists understand how all living things grow.
