The story

The Story of Hans Christian Ørsted

Hello. My name is Hans Christian Ørsted. I grew up a long, long time ago in a country called Denmark. My father had a special shop called a pharmacy where he mixed things to help people. I loved watching him work in his shop with all the colorful bottles. It was so interesting. Seeing all the powders and liquids mix together made me very curious. I wanted to know how everything in the world worked. It made me want to learn all about science and discover new things for myself.

When I grew up, I became a science teacher. I loved showing my students exciting things. One day, way back in the year 1820, I was doing an experiment in my class. I was showing everyone how electricity flows through a wire. I had a little compass on the table nearby. A compass helps you know which way is north. When I turned on the electricity, something amazing happened. The compass needle, which was usually very still, started to wiggle and dance. It moved all by itself. I was so surprised and very excited. It felt like I found a secret.

I learned that electricity and magnets are like secret friends. When electricity is moving, it makes a special power that can move a magnet. This discovery was called electromagnetism. It was a very big deal. My discovery helped other smart people invent amazing things, like electric motors that make toys go and fans spin. I am happy that my discovery helps power so many wonderful things in our world today. I lived to be 73 years old, and I am glad my curiosity helped make the world a little more magical.
