The story

Howard Carter

Hello! My name is Howard Carter, and I want to tell you a story about a great adventure. I was born on May 9th, 1874, in London, England. When I was a boy, I wasn’t very interested in school. What I truly loved to do was draw. My father was a wonderful artist, and he taught me how to capture everything I saw on paper, especially animals. Our home was near a grand house that was like a mini-museum, filled with amazing objects from ancient Egypt. I would spend hours there, sketching the mysterious statues and artifacts. That’s when I started dreaming of visiting the land of the pharaohs myself one day.

My dream came true sooner than I ever expected! When I was just 17 years old, in 1891, I was offered a job in Egypt. My task was to use my artistic skills to copy the beautiful, colorful paintings and hieroglyphs inside ancient tombs. I packed my bags and sailed to a land that felt like another world. Seeing the giant pyramids and the River Nile for the first time was incredible. I worked for an organization called the Egypt Exploration Fund. For years, I carefully traced the ancient stories painted on tomb walls. I also learned from a famous archaeologist named Flinders Petrie. He taught me how to dig carefully and patiently, treating every discovery like a precious piece of a giant puzzle.

As I grew older, I became an archaeologist myself. I spent much of my time working in a special place called the Valley of the Kings. This was the secret burial ground for many of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs. Most people believed that all the tombs in the valley had already been found, and sadly, most had been emptied by robbers long ago. But I had a strong feeling that one tomb was still hidden, waiting to be discovered. It belonged to a young pharaoh named Tutankhamun. In 1907, I met a wealthy man named Lord Carnarvon who also loved Egyptian history. He agreed to provide the money for my search. Our great hunt had begun!

Our search was not easy. Imagine digging under the hot Egyptian sun, day after day, moving tons of sand and rock. For years, we found very little—just a few small clues that kept my hope alive. After five long seasons of searching, Lord Carnarvon grew tired. He had spent a lot of money and felt it was time to give up. The year was 1922, and he told me it would be our last chance. I begged him to let me try just one more time. I had one last spot in the valley I wanted to check. Thankfully, he agreed to fund one final season. It was now or never.

And then, it happened! On November 4th, 1922, one of our workers found something amazing: a single step cut into the rock, hidden beneath the rubble. We were so excited! We carefully cleared away the sand and revealed a whole staircase leading down to a sealed doorway. I sent a message to Lord Carnarvon, telling him to come to Egypt right away. We had to wait for what felt like forever for him to arrive. Finally, on November 26th, we stood before the door. I made a small hole, lit a candle, and peered into the darkness. My hands were trembling. Lord Carnarvon stood behind me and asked, 'Can you see anything?' I could barely speak. At last, I answered, 'Yes, wonderful things.'

The room was filled with treasures more incredible than I had ever imagined. There were golden chariots, statues of animals, beautiful couches, and intricate boxes. We had found the tomb of King Tutankhamun, and it had been almost untouched for over 3,000 years! It was a treasure chest of history. But discovering the tomb was only the beginning. My team and I spent the next ten years carefully recording, photographing, and removing every single one of the 5,398 objects. The greatest discovery of all came in 1925, when we finally opened the king’s sarcophagus and found his mummy, wearing a breathtakingly beautiful solid gold mask. It was the face of the boy king, finally revealed to the world.

I dedicated the rest of my life to studying and preserving the treasures from Tutankhamun's tomb. The discovery wasn't just about gold; it was a window into the past that taught us so much about life in ancient Egypt. I lived to be 64 years old, and I never stopped being amazed by what we found. People remember me for my patience and determination, which led to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. I hope my story inspires you to follow your dreams with all your heart, because you never know what wonderful things you might find.
