The story

James Madison: Father of the Constitution

Hello! My name is James Madison. I was born in the year 1751. When I was a little boy, I lived on a big farm in a place called Virginia a long, long time ago. My favorite thing to do was read books. I read books about everything—how to build things, how countries work, and big ideas that could help people.

When I grew up, my friends and I were creating a new country called the United States of America. We needed a special set of rules so everyone would know how to be fair and kind to each other. I had so many ideas from all my books! In the year 1787, I helped write our country's most important rulebook, called the Constitution. It was like a list of promises to make sure the country would be a good and safe place for everyone to live.

Because I helped so much with the new rules, the people of America asked me to be their leader. In the year 1809, I became the fourth president! It was a very big job. I worked hard to help our new country grow strong and stay safe. My wife, Dolley, helped me, and she was wonderful at making everyone feel welcome at our home, the White House.

I lived to be 85 years old, and my life ended in the year 1836. Even though I am not here anymore, the important rules I helped write for the Constitution are still used today. People remember me as the 'Father of the Constitution' because my ideas helped build a country where everyone's voice can be heard.
