The story

James Madison: Father of the Constitution

Hello, my name is James Madison. I was born a long time ago, on March 16th, 1751, in a place called Virginia. I grew up on my family’s big farm, which was named Montpelier. When I was a boy, I was often quiet and sometimes I was not very healthy. Because I spent a lot of time inside, I read every single book I could get my hands on. Reading was my favorite thing to do. The books taught me all about the world and about different ways that people could govern themselves and lead a country.

When I grew up, the place where I lived, America, was not its own country yet. It was ruled by a king who lived far across the ocean. I believed we could do better, and I wanted to help create a new, fair government for everyone. In the year 1787, I went to a very important meeting called the Constitutional Convention. I brought many of my big ideas with me. I shared my plans for how our new government should work, and I took lots of notes so we wouldn't forget anything. My ideas were so helpful in creating the country's new rulebook, called the Constitution, that people started calling me the 'Father of the Constitution.'

I believed that a good government should not only make rules, but it should also protect the rights of its people. So, in 1789, I wrote down a special list of promises to all Americans. This list is called the Bill of Rights. It makes sure that everyone has important freedoms that can’t be taken away. Some of these freedoms include being able to say what you think and choosing your own religion. This was my way of making sure the new country would be a place of fairness and liberty for all.

After all that hard work, something very exciting happened. In 1809, I became the fourth President of the United States. It was a great honor. I moved into a special home called the White House with my wonderful wife, Dolley. But being president was not always easy. We had a difficult time during the War of 1812 when our new capital city was attacked. Our enemies even burned the White House. But my brave wife, Dolley, saved a famous painting of our first president, George Washington, right before the building was damaged.

After I finished being president, I returned to my home at Montpelier. I lived to be 85 years old. Today, people remember me for helping to create the rules for the United States government in the Constitution. They also remember me for writing the Bill of Rights, which still protects the freedoms of all Americans and helps keep the country strong and fair.
