Just want Joséphine de Beauharnais?
Hello, my name is Joséphine, and I would like to share my remarkable story with you. Though history knows me as an empress, my life began far from any palace. I was born on the beautiful Caribbean island of Martinique on June 23rd, 1763, and my full name was Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie. My childhood was spent on my family's sugar plantation, a place filled with the sweet scent of tropical flowers and the sound of warm sea breezes. It was a simple, sunny world, and I had no idea how dramatically my life was about to change. My formal education was modest, consisting of what I learned at a local convent school. I learned the skills expected of a young lady of my time, but nothing could have prepared me for the journey that lay ahead. This quiet island life was the first chapter of a story that would take me across the ocean and into the very heart of history.
In 1779, when I was just sixteen years old, I left my island home and traveled to France for an arranged marriage to a young, ambitious aristocrat named Alexandre de Beauharnais. Stepping into Parisian society was like entering another world. Life became a whirlwind of grand parties, elegant gowns, and intricate social rules. I soon became a mother to two wonderful children who would be the center of my world: my son, Eugène, was born in 1781, and my daughter, Hortense, followed in 1783. However, this glittering life of the French nobility was built on unstable ground. In 1789, the French Revolution erupted, turning our world upside down. The period that followed, known as the Reign of Terror, was filled with fear and chaos. In 1794, both Alexandre and I were arrested and thrown into prison simply because we were aristocrats. The future seemed terrifyingly uncertain. My husband, Alexandre, was executed, and I was only freed from prison after the powerful leader behind the Terror was overthrown. I was now a widow, left alone to protect and provide for my two young children in a changed and dangerous France.
Joséphine: An Empress and Her Roses

My life took another unexpected turn in 1795 when I, a widow trying to navigate this new society, met a brilliant and determined young army general named Napoléon Bonaparte. He was captivating, and we quickly fell in love. We were married on March 9th, 1796. From that moment, my life was tied to his incredible rise. Napoléon's ambition and military genius propelled him to the height of power in France. His journey culminated on December 2nd, 1804, in a magnificent ceremony at the grand Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. In front of the most powerful people in Europe, Napoléon took the imperial crown and placed it on my head, making me the Empress of the French. Our home was the stunning Château de Malmaison, just outside of Paris. It was there that I could truly indulge my passions. I turned the grounds into a paradise, filling the gardens with rare and beautiful flowers from all over the world, especially my beloved roses. I also collected exotic animals, like kangaroos and black swans, making Malmaison a place of wonder and beauty.
Despite the love Napoléon and I shared, a shadow loomed over our marriage. As the Emperor of France, he desperately needed an heir to secure the future of his dynasty. Sadly, we were unable to have children together. This personal sorrow became a matter of state, and we both understood that a difficult decision had to be made for the sake of the empire. In 1810, our marriage was annulled. It was a deeply painful time for both of us, but our affection for one another remained. I was allowed to keep my title of Empress and continued to live at my cherished home, Malmaison. With my public duties lessened, I devoted myself entirely to my greatest passion: botany. I sent collectors across the globe to bring back plants and seeds that had never been seen in Europe. My gardens at Malmaison became a living museum and one of the most magnificent botanical collections of the time.
I lived to be 50 years old, passing away in 1814. Though my marriage to Napoléon had ended and his empire would soon fall, my story continued through my children. My son, Eugène, became a viceroy, and my daughter, Hortense, became the Queen of Holland. Through them, my grandchildren and their descendants would become the kings and queens of many European nations. Today, people remember me for the elegance and grace I brought to the imperial court, but my true legacy is rooted in the earth. The magnificent gardens I cultivated at Malmaison, and especially my world-famous collection of roses, remain my lasting gift to the world, a symbol of a life that found beauty even in the most difficult of times.
