Just want Joséphine de Beauharnais?
Hello! My name is Joséphine, and I was once the Empress of France. But my story begins far away from the grand palaces of Europe, on a sunny island called Martinique. I was born there on June 23rd, 1763, into a family who gave me the sweet nickname Yeyette. My childhood was filled with warmth and adventure, and I loved nothing more than running through the vast sugarcane fields of our family's estate. The air was thick with the sweet smell of sugar, and the sun was always warm on my skin. One afternoon, a fortune teller looked at my hand and told me something I could hardly believe. She said that one day, I would be 'more than a queen.' I just giggled at her words, thinking it was a silly game. The idea that a simple island girl could become royalty seemed like a fairy tale, something that could never possibly come true for me.
When I was a teenager, my life changed forever. I said goodbye to my island home and sailed across the great ocean to France, where a new life was waiting for me. On December 13th, 1779, I married a nobleman named Alexandre de Beauharnais. Together, we had two wonderful children who I adored, a son named Eugène and a daughter named Hortense. Our family life, however, was soon caught in a great storm. A period of great change and danger called the French Revolution swept across the country, turning our world upside down. It was a terrifying time for everyone. My husband, Alexandre, was arrested and executed in 1794. Soon after, I was put in prison myself. I was so scared, but when I was finally freed, I knew I had to be strong. My children needed me more than ever.
Joséphine: An Empress's Story
After I was released from prison, I found myself in Paris, a city that was still recovering from the revolution. It was a difficult place to be, but I was determined to build a safe and happy life for Eugène and Hortense. In 1795, my life took another surprising turn when I met a young and very ambitious army general named Napoléon Bonaparte. He was clever, confident, and seemed destined for great things. We quickly fell in love, and he gave me a new name, Joséphine, which is the name the world would come to know me by. Our connection was powerful, and on March 9th, 1796, we were married. I had a feeling my life was about to change in a way I could never have imagined, just as the fortune teller had predicted so long ago.
Napoléon's success as a leader grew with incredible speed. He became the most powerful man in France, and in 1804, he was named the Emperor. This meant that I was to become his Empress. Our coronation ceremony, held on December 2nd, 1804, was one of the most magnificent events anyone had ever witnessed. I remember walking down the aisle of the great cathedral wearing a beautiful white gown embroidered with golden thread and a long, heavy robe made of red velvet. Becoming Empress was a dream come true. I loved decorating our beautiful palaces and setting new styles in fashion that women all across Europe copied. Most importantly, I tried to use my powerful position to be kind and to help people who were in need whenever I could.
After several happy years, the time came when Napoléon and I had to go our separate ways, and our marriage came to an end in 1810. I left the palace and moved to a beautiful home of my own just outside of Paris, called the Château de Malmaison. It was there that I could finally focus on my greatest passion: my garden. I filled it with rare and exotic plants and flowers that I collected from all over the world. My greatest love was for roses. I gathered over 250 different kinds, creating a collection that was famous across all of Europe. My garden at Malmaison became my sanctuary, a place of peace and incredible beauty.
I spent my final years in my beloved home, surrounded by the beauty and fragrance of my gardens at Malmaison. I lived to be 50 years old and passed away in 1814. Today, people remember me as the first Empress of the French, a woman who set trends in fashion, and for my great and lasting love of roses. Many of the beautiful rose varieties that I helped discover and cultivate still grow in gardens all around the world, a colorful and living reminder of the girl from a small island who became an Empress.
