The story

Philip IV: The Planet King

Hello. My name is Philip IV, and I was the King of Spain during a time of great change and creativity. I was born on April 8th, 1605, in the city of Valladolid, Spain. My father was King Philip III, and from my earliest days, my entire life was shaped by my future role. My education was not about games or simple lessons; it was a rigorous preparation for the immense duty of ruling a global empire. I studied history, governance, and military strategy, always knowing the weight of the crown awaited me. That day came sooner than I expected. In 1621, my father passed away, and suddenly, at only 16 years old, I became king. The responsibility I felt was enormous, as the future of Spain rested on my young shoulders.

My kingdom was so vast that it earned me the nickname 'the Planet King,' because it was said that the sun never set on the Spanish Empire. Our lands stretched across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. To help me govern this massive territory, I relied heavily on my chief minister, the capable Count-Duke of Olivares. Together, we faced incredible challenges. For much of my reign, Europe was torn apart by the Thirty Years' War, a long and exhausting conflict that drained our resources and demanded constant attention. At the same time, we faced serious struggles within our own empire. In 1640, major revolts erupted in both Portugal and Catalonia. These internal rebellions were a clear sign of the strain our global empire was under, and they proved how difficult it was to hold everything together.

Despite the political and military turmoil, my greatest passion was for the arts, and it was in this area that my reign truly shined. In 1623, I met a brilliant young painter named Diego Velázquez and immediately recognized his incredible talent. I made him my court painter, and he became a trusted friend for the rest of his life. Velázquez painted dozens of stunning portraits of me, my family, and the royal court, capturing our world with honesty and genius. His most famous masterpiece, 'Las Meninas,' is a breathtakingly complex scene from within our palace walls. My support for culture extended beyond painting. I loved the theater and was a great supporter of playwrights like Pedro Calderón de la Barca, whose works filled our stages. I also commissioned the construction of the grand Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid as a center for art and leisure. Because of this explosion of creativity, my era became known as the Spanish Golden Age, a time when our culture flourished even as our political power was tested.

My personal life was also filled with great hope and deep sorrow. My first wife was Elisabeth of France, and together we had a son, Balthasar Charles, who was the heir to my throne. All my hopes for the future of Spain rested on him, and he was a bright and promising young prince. Our world was shattered in 1646 when he tragically passed away. The grief was immense, but as a king, I had a duty to secure the future of our dynasty. In 1649, I married my niece, Mariana of Austria, to ensure we would have an heir. Together, we had a son who would eventually become King Charles II. A decade later, in 1659, our long and costly war with France finally came to an end. The peace was welcome, but it also marked a significant shift, acknowledging that Spain's dominant position in Europe was changing.

My reign lasted for 44 years, a long period filled with deep contrasts. It was a time of immense artistic achievement that stood alongside serious political and military decline. I lived to be 60 years old, passing away in 1665. While my time as king saw many hardships and the shrinking of our empire's power, I am remembered today for presiding over the spectacular Spanish Golden Age. The magnificent art, literature, and culture that I championed are my most enduring legacy, celebrated around the world as a high point in human creativity.
