Just want King Philip IV of Spain?
Hello! My name is Philip, and I had the great fortune of being a king. I was born in a grand palace in Valladolid, Spain, on April 8th, 1605. My parents were King Philip III and Queen Margaret of Austria. From the moment I was born, I was a prince. This meant that I was part of the royal family, and everyone knew that one day I would be expected to rule over the vast Spanish Empire. Our empire was truly enormous, with lands all across the globe in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. It was a very big and important job to prepare for, and my childhood was spent learning everything I would need to know to be a good ruler for my people. I had the best tutors and studied history, languages, and how to lead. The weight of this future responsibility was something I understood from a very young age.
My life changed forever in 1621. I was just 16 years old when my father, the king, passed away. Suddenly, the future I had been preparing for was here. I became King Philip IV of Spain. My kingdom was so large that it stretched across different continents. Because of this, people later gave me the nickname the 'Planet King.' They said the sun never set on my empire because when it was nighttime in one part of my lands, it was daytime in another. Being a king at such a young age was a huge challenge. To help me govern, I relied on my trusted advisor, the Count-Duke of Olivares. He was very experienced and helped me make important decisions for the kingdom. Together, we worked hard to keep our enormous empire strong and running smoothly, managing everything from trade and laws to the army and the navy. It was a time of great learning for me, as I grew into my role as the leader of one of the world's most powerful nations.

Being a king was not always filled with celebrations and grand events. My reign was very long, and it was a time of great challenges for Spain. For many years, my country was involved in many conflicts and wars. One of the biggest was the Thirty Years' War, a very long and complicated struggle that finally came to an end in 1648. These wars were difficult and cost a lot of money and resources. There were also troubles within my own empire. In 1640, a very difficult event occurred when Portugal, which had been part of my kingdom, decided to rebel and become its own independent kingdom again. As the king, I had to be strong during these difficult times. I was faced with many tough choices to protect my people and hold my remaining lands together. It was a constant test of my leadership and strength.
Even with all the serious duties of being a king, my greatest passion was art. I truly loved paintings, going to the theater to see plays, and reading beautiful poetry. I believed that art made a kingdom great, so I invited the best artists of my time to come and work at my court. My absolute favorite was a brilliant painter named Diego Velázquez. I saw his amazing talent and I made him my official court painter. He created many masterpieces for me, including the very famous painting called 'Las Meninas.' This incredible work of art even shows me and my family in a reflection in a mirror. Because I supported artists like Velázquez so much, it helped create a special time in my country's history. People now call this period the Spanish Golden Age, a time of incredible creativity and cultural achievement that I was very proud to be a part of.
I reigned as king for 44 years, which was one of the longest reigns in the history of my country. I lived to be 60 years old. Today, when people look back at my time as king, I am remembered as a great lover and supporter of the arts. I helped fill the world with beautiful paintings and plays that are still enjoyed today. The Spanish Golden Age, which flourished during my time on the throne, is still celebrated for its amazing creativity and culture, and I am happy my name is connected to it.
