The story

King Philip IV: The Planet King

Hello! My name is Philip, and I was a king of Spain a long time ago. I was born on April 8th, 1605, in a beautiful palace in a city called Valladolid. Being a prince was a very special job. I didn't go to a regular school like you might. Instead, I had tutors who taught me everything I needed to know about history, languages, and how to be a good leader. From a very young age, I was getting ready for the day I would become king. It was a lot to learn, but I knew it was my duty to be prepared to rule my great kingdom one day.

When I was just 15 years old, a very big change happened in my life. In the year 1621, my father, the king, passed away. That meant it was my turn to wear the crown. I became King Philip the Fourth! It felt like a huge responsibility for someone so young. My kingdom was one of the biggest in the world, with lands spread far across the oceans. It was too much for one person to handle alone. Luckily, I had a trusted advisor to help me. His name was the Count-Duke of Olivares. He was very smart and helped me make important decisions for our country. Together, we worked hard to rule the enormous Spanish kingdom and keep it strong.

Even though being a king was a very serious job, I had a great passion for something wonderful: art. I just loved to be surrounded by beautiful things! My palace was filled with amazing paintings and sculptures. I invited the best painters from all over to come and work for me. My very favorite painter was a man named Diego Velázquez. He was a true genius with a paintbrush, and over the years, he also became a good friend. He painted many pictures of me and my family, capturing us exactly as we were. His artwork is still famous all around the world today. Because I supported so many talented artists during my time as king, people often call it a 'Golden Age' for art in Spain.

I was the king of Spain for 44 years, which is a very long time to wear a crown. I lived to be 60 years old. Today, when people learn about me, they sometimes call me the 'Planet King.' That's because my kingdom stretched so far across the globe, it was like I ruled a whole planet! I hope you'll also remember me as a king who loved art and helped fill the world with beautiful paintings that people can still enjoy in museums today.
