Just want Mimar Sinan?
Hello. My name is Mimar Sinan, and I was a builder who created some of the world's most beautiful buildings. I was born in a small village called Ağırnas, which is in modern-day Turkey, around the year 1490. Growing up, I loved helping my father, who was a stonemason and a carpenter. He taught me how to shape stone and wood with my hands, and I would dream of one day building magnificent structures that would touch the sky. When I was a young man, around 1512, an incredible opportunity came my way. I was chosen to go to the capital city, Istanbul, to serve the great Ottoman Sultan. Leaving my small village for a huge city was a big change, but it marked the true beginning of my amazing journey.
In Istanbul, my life changed completely. I became a Janissary, which was a group of the Sultan's most elite soldiers. But I wasn't just a soldier; I was also trained to be a military engineer. This meant that when the army of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent went on long campaigns, my skills were needed. My job was to help the army move and stay safe. I learned how to build strong bridges so thousands of soldiers could cross wide rivers. I repaired fortresses to protect us from enemies and even helped design ships for our navy. During these travels, I journeyed across the vast empire and saw incredible buildings in famous cities like Cairo and Damascus. Staring up at their amazing designs, my mind filled with new ideas for beautiful shapes, strong arches, and grand domes that I hoped to build myself one day.
Mimar Sinan: The Sultan's Architect

In Istanbul, my life changed completely. I became a Janissary, which was a group of the Sultan's most elite soldiers. But I wasn't just a soldier; I was also trained to be a military engineer. This meant that when the army of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent went on long campaigns, my skills were needed. My job was to help the army move and stay safe. I learned how to build strong bridges so thousands of soldiers could cross wide rivers. I repaired fortresses to protect us from enemies and even helped design ships for our navy. Staring up at their amazing designs, my mind filled with new ideas for beautiful shapes, strong arches, and grand domes that I hoped to build myself one day.
The Sultan noticed my passion for building and saw that I was skilled at my work. In the year 1539, he gave me the most important job I could ever imagine: I was appointed the Chief Royal Architect. This meant I was in charge of designing the grandest and most important buildings in the entire empire. I like to think of my career in three stages, marked by my most famous mosques. The first was what I call my 'apprenticeship' work, the Şehzade Mosque in Istanbul, which I finished in 1548. Next came my 'journeyman' piece, the magnificent Süleymaniye Mosque, which was completed in 1557 for Sultan Suleiman himself. It sits proudly on a hill, looking over the entire city. But my greatest masterpiece, the building I was proudest of, was the Selimiye Mosque in the city of Edirne. When I finished it in 1575, its enormous, perfectly shaped dome was one of the largest in the whole world.
I served as the chief architect for nearly 50 years, working for three different sultans. During that time, I designed and built over 300 structures. These included not just grand mosques, but also practical things like sturdy bridges and amazing aqueducts that brought fresh, clean water to the people in the cities. I lived a very long and full life and was almost 100 years old when I passed away in the year 1588. Today, hundreds of my buildings still stand tall and beautiful across Turkey and beyond. People from all over the world visit them to see their beauty, and I am remembered as the architect who created some of the most wonderful buildings the world has ever seen.
