The story

The Story of Montserrat Caballé

Hello! My name is Montserrat Caballé, and I am excited to share my story with you. I was born in the beautiful city of Barcelona, Spain, on April 12th, 1933. My family did not have a lot of money, but our home was always filled with love and music. My world changed when I first heard opera playing on the radio. The power and emotion in the singers' voices captivated me, and I knew in that moment that I was meant to be a singer. From that day on, even as a young girl, I spent countless hours practicing, dreaming that my own voice could one day soar with the same beauty and strength as the performers I so admired.

My parents saw my deep passion for music and supported my dream. With the help of a very generous family, I was able to begin my formal studies at Barcelona’s famous Liceu Conservatory around the year 1944. Those years were filled with intense work. I spent hours every day learning the proper way to breathe, how to control every note, and how to pour my feelings into the music I sang. After graduating, my journey took me to Basel, Switzerland, where I joined an opera company. It was an exciting time, and in 1956, I finally made my professional debut on a grand stage, playing the role of Mimì in the opera La bohème. It felt like a dream coming true, but I knew it was only the beginning.

The single moment that changed my entire life took place on April 20th, 1965. I was in New York City and received an urgent call to fill in for another singer who had become ill. The performance was of the opera Lucrezia Borgia at one of the most famous concert venues in the world, Carnegie Hall. I had almost no time to prepare, and my nerves were high, but I knew I had to take the chance. I walked onto that stage and sang with every bit of my heart and soul. When the final note ended, the audience erupted in applause. The very next day, the newspapers were filled with incredible reviews, calling me a new superstar. That unforgettable night launched my international career and earned me the nickname 'La Superba,' which means 'the superb one.'

After my debut at Carnegie Hall, my career took off in a way I had only dreamed of. I received invitations to perform in the greatest opera houses across the globe, from La Scala in Milan to the Royal Opera House in London and the Vienna State Opera. Audiences and critics were often amazed by my vocal control, especially my ability to sing very softly yet with great power, a technique known as 'pianissimo.' During my travels and performances, my life changed in another wonderful way. While singing in an opera together in 1963, I met a talented tenor named Bernabé Martí. We fell in love, and we were married the following year, in 1964. For decades, I dedicated myself to the stage, sharing the timeless and beautiful stories of opera with people everywhere.

In 1986, my career took an unexpected and exciting turn. I had the pleasure of meeting Freddie Mercury, the famous lead singer of the rock band Queen. He was a great admirer of opera, and I was equally impressed by his incredible stage presence and musical energy. We decided to combine our two very different worlds—my classical opera style and his powerful rock music. Together, in 1987, we created and released a song called 'Barcelona.' It was a powerful anthem written for my beloved home city, which had been chosen to host the Olympic Games in 1992. The song was a huge success and showed everyone that when different styles of music come together, they can create something truly magical and new.

I continued to sing for many years, sharing my passion for music with the world. I lived a full and wonderful life and was 85 years old when my story came to a peaceful end. Today, people remember me for my voice, my control, and the deep emotion I brought to every performance on the opera stage. I hope my story shows you that no matter where you start in life, if you work hard and follow your passion with all your heart, you can make your dreams come true and share your unique gift with the world.
