Montserrat Caballé: The Girl with the Superb Voice

Hello, my name is Montserrat Caballé, and I want to tell you the story of my voice. I was born on April 12th, 1933, in a beautiful city in Spain called Barcelona. My family did not have a lot of money, but our home was always full of happiness, love, and especially music. From the time I was a very little girl, I fell in love with the powerful, beautiful sound of opera. It was like magic to me. I knew deep in my heart that singing was my dream, and I was ready to work as hard as I could to make it come true. I studied at a special music school called the Liceu Conservatory. Every day, I practiced to make my voice stronger and clearer. It was hard work, but I loved every minute of it. In 1954, all my effort paid off when I graduated with a special honor: a gold medal!

After graduating, my big adventure began. I moved to a new country, Switzerland, to sing in my very first professional opera in 1956. It was exciting, but the most important night of my life was still to come. It happened on April 20th, 1965, in New York City. I was scheduled to be at a famous concert hall called Carnegie Hall. A very well-known singer was supposed to perform that night, but she became ill and could not sing. At the very last minute, I was asked to take her place. My heart was beating so fast! I was nervous, but I was also incredibly excited for the chance to sing for so many people. The opera was called 'Lucrezia Borgia,' and I sang with all my heart and soul. When the performance was over, something amazing happened. The audience stood up and clapped for 25 minutes straight. They wouldn't stop! From that one incredible night, my life changed forever, and people all over the world started to know my name.

After my big night at Carnegie Hall, my dream of being a world-famous opera singer came true. I traveled across the globe, singing on the biggest and most beautiful stages you can imagine. My voice had a special quality that people loved. I could sing very, very softly, in a way that is called 'pianissimo,' but the sound would travel all the way to the back of the giant concert halls. Every single person could hear my quietest notes perfectly. It felt like I had a superpower! Because of the power and beauty of my voice, people gave me a nickname. They started calling me 'La Superba,' which is a fancy Italian way of saying 'the superb one.' I felt so honored to have a name that celebrated the gift I worked so hard to develop and share with others.

One of the most wonderful and surprising parts of my life was my friendship with a rock singer named Freddie Mercury. He was the lead singer of the famous band Queen. Our music was very different. I sang classical opera, and he sang rock and roll, but we discovered that we both loved music with all our hearts. Our shared passion brought us together, and we became great friends. In 1987, we decided to create something special together. We wrote a song called 'Barcelona' to celebrate my beloved hometown. The song was a mix of my opera style and his rock style, creating a sound that was completely new and exciting. A few years later, in 1992, the Summer Olympics were held in my city, and our song was chosen as the official theme. I was so proud to hear our music welcome the entire world to Barcelona.

I lived a very full and happy life, and I was lucky enough to keep singing for people until I was much older. I lived to be 85 years old. Today, people remember me for my powerful voice and the passion I brought to every performance. I hope my story shows you that no matter where you come from, if you have a dream and you work hard, you can share your special gift with the entire world.
