Just want Vinton Cerf?
Hello. My name is Vinton Cerf, but my friends call me Vint. I was born in the year 1943. When I was a boy, I loved solving puzzles and figuring out how things worked. Computers were like the biggest, most exciting puzzles of all. They were brand new and could do so many amazing things, but I had a big question: how could I get them to work together?
Imagine you have two friends who speak different languages. How can they share secrets? I wanted to solve this puzzle for computers. In the year 1974, my good friend, Bob Kahn, and I had an idea. We decided to create a special set of rules, like a secret handshake that all the computers could learn. We called our idea TCP/IP. This special handshake would let one computer send a little message, like a postcard, to another computer, even if they were far apart or very different from each other.
Our special rules helped create something you use every day: the Internet. Because of our work, computers all over the world can now share pictures, play games, and help you learn new things. It lets you say hello to your grandma on a video call or watch your favorite cartoons. I am so happy I could help connect the world, and I am still working today to make the Internet a fun and safe place for everyone.
