The story

Vishnu Sharma and the Panchatantra

Greetings. My name is Vishnu Sharma. While the exact year of my birth has been lost to time, I lived in ancient India sometime around the 3rd century BCE. I was a scholar, a teacher, and above all, a storyteller. My life took an unexpected turn when I was summoned by a great king named Amarashakti, who was the ruler of the kingdom of Mahilaropya. The king had a very serious problem that troubled him day and night. He had three sons, and while he loved them dearly, they had absolutely no interest in learning. They were foolish and refused to study, which worried the king deeply. How could they possibly rule a kingdom one day if they knew nothing of the world, of politics, or of wisdom?

King Amarashakti had tried everything he could think of to educate his sons. He had hired the finest teachers in the land, but none of them could capture the princes' attention for even a moment. In desperation, he called upon me, as he knew I had a different way of looking at the world and a unique approach to teaching. He made me a grand offer. If I could transform his sons into wise and capable scholars, fit to be future rulers, he would reward me with a hundred villages and a fortune in gold. Other scholars had told the king it would take many years to teach the stubborn princes, but I made him a bold promise. I told him, 'Your Majesty, I will accomplish this task in just six months.' The king was astonished by my confidence, but he was desperate enough to agree to my terms.

I knew that forcing the princes to read dull, heavy books would fail just as it had for every other teacher. My method had to be different. Instead of lectures, I decided to teach them through stories. I created a special collection of tales just for them, which I called the Panchatantra. The name itself means 'The Five Treatises' or 'The Five Principles.' Each 'principle' was a book filled with interconnected fables about talking animals who behaved very much like people, facing similar dilemmas and challenges. The first book, Mitra-bheda, or 'The Loss of Friends,' taught them about how friendships can be cleverly broken by deceitful words. The second, Mitra-lābha, or 'The Gaining of Friends,' showed them the incredible power of teamwork and forming alliances. The other three books taught them important lessons about war and peace, strategy, losing what you've gained through foolishness, and the great danger of acting without thinking.

Every day, I would gather the princes and tell them my stories. They were completely captivated. They listened intently as they learned about a clever jackal who tricked a powerful lion, about a group of doves who worked together to escape a hunter's net, and about the long-standing rivalry between crows and owls. These were not just simple animal tales meant for entertainment. Woven into each story were important lessons about life, leadership, and morality—what we called niti shastra, which means the art of wise conduct. Through these fables, the princes learned how to choose good advisors, the danger of trusting those who only flatter you, and the critical importance of thinking before you act. Because the lessons were wrapped in exciting stories, the princes learned everything they needed to know without ever feeling like they were being taught in a boring, traditional way.

Just as I had promised, in six months, the princes were transformed. They became knowledgeable and wise young men, fully prepared to lead the kingdom one day. My life was lived many, many centuries ago, and the specific details of my own story have faded with time. But the stories I created for those princes have not. The Panchatantra became one of the most famous books in the entire world. It was carried by travelers and traders across vast deserts and oceans, and over the centuries it has been translated into more than 50 languages. My fables have inspired countless other storytellers throughout history. I am remembered not for the gold or villages the king offered me, but for the idea that a good story is the greatest teacher of all, capable of sharing wisdom with every new generation.
