The story

The Story of Xenophon

Hello! My name is Xenophon. I was born in a beautiful city called Athens in Ancient Greece, around the year 430 BCE. When I was a young man, I loved to learn. My favorite teacher was a very wise man named Socrates. He taught me to ask big questions and think about the world in new ways. He was the smartest person I ever knew! I listened to every word he said, and it helped me become a good leader later in life. I always enjoyed horses and being outdoors, but I never knew that my life would be filled with incredible adventures.

When I was around 30 years old, in the year 401 BCE, I was invited to join an exciting journey. A Persian prince named Cyrus the Younger was gathering a big army of Greek soldiers, who were known as the best fighters in the world. He wanted our help to become the new king of the giant Persian Empire. It sounded like a grand adventure, so I went along! We marched for many months, deep into the heart of Persia. We fought a huge battle, and we were winning! But then, something terrible happened. Cyrus, our brave leader, was killed in the fight. Suddenly, we were an army without a leader, trapped far from home, surrounded by enemies.

There were ten thousand of us Greek soldiers, and we were scared and lost. The enemy tricked our generals and captured them. We had to choose new leaders to guide us home, and the other soldiers chose me to be one of them! It was my job to help lead them to safety. For months, we marched across snowy mountains and hot deserts. We fought off enemies and searched for food. It was very difficult, but we never gave up. I will never forget the day we finally climbed a mountain and saw the sea. We all shouted with joy, 'Thalatta! Thalatta!'. That means 'The sea! The sea!'. We knew we were finally close to home.

After my great adventure, I wanted everyone to know the story of the Ten Thousand brave soldiers. So, I wrote it all down in a book called the Anabasis. It’s a true story about our long march home. Writing became one of my greatest passions. I wrote other books, too. I wrote about my teacher, Socrates, to make sure people remembered his wonderful ideas. I also wrote about history, how to be a good leader, and even how to take care of horses and farms. I loved sharing what I had learned with the world.

I lived a long and full life, until about the year 354 BCE. I was about 76 years old. Even though I am no longer there, my stories live on. For thousands of years, people have read my books to learn about adventure, bravery, and leadership. Generals, presidents, and kids just like you have been inspired by the story of how ten thousand friends stuck together and found their way home. I hope my story shows you that even when things seem scary and you feel lost, you can be a leader and find your way through.
