Just want Yongle Emperor?
Hello! My name is Zhu Di, but the world would come to know me as the Yongle Emperor. I was born on May 2nd, 1360, the fourth son of the great Hongwu Emperor, who founded the Ming dynasty in China. As a young prince, my father gave me an important job. I was made the Prince of Yan and sent to a city called Beiping, which is modern-day Beijing. My duty was to guard the northern border of our empire. It was a big responsibility, but living on the frontier taught me how to be a strong leader and a skilled military commander.
When my father passed away in 1398, he chose my young nephew to be the new emperor. However, my nephew and I did not agree on how the empire should be run, and our disagreements led to a great conflict. I led my armies from the north in a war that lasted for several years. In 1402, my forces captured the capital city of Nanjing, and I became the new emperor of the Ming dynasty. I chose the name 'Yongle' for my reign, which means 'Perpetual Happiness,' because I wanted to bring a long and happy peace to China.
As emperor, I had big plans for our empire. One of my first decisions was to move the capital from Nanjing to Beiping, the city I knew so well from my time as a prince. I renamed it Beijing, which means the 'Northern Capital.' Starting around 1406, I ordered the construction of a magnificent new palace there. This palace was like a city within a city, and today it is known as the Forbidden City. It was a massive project that took over a million workers nearly fifteen years to build! I also wanted to preserve all the knowledge of our culture. In 1403, I gathered thousands of scholars and asked them to create the Yongle Encyclopedia. By 1408, they had finished their work, creating the largest encyclopedia the world had ever seen at that time.

I was also very curious about the world beyond China's borders. I believed it was important for other kingdoms to see the greatness and power of our Ming dynasty. To achieve this, I chose a brilliant admiral named Zheng He to lead enormous fleets of ships on grand voyages. These ships were called 'treasure ships' because of the amazing things they carried. Starting in 1405, Zheng He sailed on seven different expeditions. His journeys took him all the way to India, Arabia, and even the coast of Africa. His ships returned with incredible treasures, new knowledge, and even a giraffe for my royal zoo!
I spent much of my reign working to protect our northern borders, often leading my armies myself. It was during one of these military campaigns in 1424 that my life came to an end. I lived to be 64 years old. Today, people remember me for the grand projects I started. The Forbidden City in Beijing, which I ordered to be built, is visited by millions of people every year. The stories of Zheng He's incredible voyages still inspire sailors and explorers around the world. I worked to make my empire strong and brilliant, and I hope my story shows what can be achieved with a bold vision.
