The Shapes That Build the World
Hello. We are hiding all around you, but you might not know our names yet. One of us can roll and roll and roll, just like a bouncy ball. Another one of us is perfect for stacking high, like your favorite building blocks. One has a pointy top just like a birthday party hat. Another one is round and tall like a can of yummy soup. Can you guess who we are? We love to play hide-and-seek in your toy box and in the kitchen. We are everywhere you look, waiting for you to find us and play with us. We are so much fun.
We are 3D Shapes. I am Sphere. I am Cube. I am Cone. And I am Cylinder. A long, long, long time ago, even before your grandparents were born, people found us. Around 3000 BCE, friends in faraway places called ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia noticed us. They used me, Cube, to make strong bricks for their houses. They used me, Cylinder, to make tall, strong pillars to hold up their roofs so they would be safe. They looked up in the big sky and saw that I, Sphere, looked just like the bright sun and the shiny moon. They knew we were special and helpful shapes.
Today, you can see us everywhere you look. I am the soccer ball you kick in the grass and the sweet orange you eat for a snack. I am the gift box you open on your birthday and the chilly ice cube that cools your drink. We love helping you build tall towers that reach for the sky. We love helping you play fun games with your friends. We are the building blocks of your wonderful world. We are always ready for an adventure. So, what will you create with us today?

About
3D shapes are solid figures with three dimensions—length, width, and height. Prehistoric peoples, including those who built Stonehenge and created geometric patterns in Europe and Mesoamerica, had an understanding of geometric concepts long before ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and Greeks. These shapes are fundamental to mathematics, science, and engineering.
